LinkedList

Remove element at index from LinkedList example

With this example we are going to demonstrate how to remove an element at a specific index from a LinkedList. In short, to remove an element at a specific index from a LinkedList you should:

  • Create a new LinkedList.
  • Populate the list with elements, with the add(E e) API method of the LinkedLink.
  • Invoke the remove(int index) API method of the LinkedList. It removes and returns the element from the specified index, shifting subsequent elements to the left.

Let’s take a look at the code snippet that follows:

package com.javacodegeeks.snippets.core;

import java.util.LinkedList;

public class RemoveElementIndexLinkedList {

  public static void main(String[] args) {

    // Create a LinkedList and populate it with elements
    LinkedList linkedList = new LinkedList();
    linkedList.add("element_1");
    linkedList.add("element_2");
    linkedList.add("element_3");
    linkedList.add("element_4");
    linkedList.add("element_5");

    System.out.println("LinkedList contains : " + linkedList);

    /*
     * Object remove(int index) method removes and returns the element from
     * the specified index shifting subsequent elements to the left
     */
    Object removedElement = linkedList.remove(3);
    System.out.println(removedElement + " has been removed from LinkedList");
    System.out.println("LinkedList contains : " + linkedList);
  }
}

Output:

LinkedList contains : [element_1, element_2, element_3, element_4, element_5]
element_4 has been removed from LinkedList
LinkedList contains : [element_1, element_2, element_3, element_5]

This was an example of how to remove an element at a specific index from a LinkedList in Java.
