Set tool tip for tab in JTabbedPane

With this example we shall see how to set the tool tip for a tab in JTabbedPane.

In order to do that, one should follow these steps:

  • Create a new JFrame.
  • Call frame.getContentPane().setLayout(new GridLayout(1, 1) to set up grid layout for the frame.
  • Use JTabbedPane(JTabbedPane.TOP) to get a JTabbedPane.
  • Use tabbedPane.addTab to add a tool tip.

Let’s see the code:

package com.javacodegeeks.snippets.desktop;

import java.awt.GridLayout;

import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
import javax.swing.JTabbedPane;

public class SetToolTipForTabInJTabbedPane {

	private static void createAndShowGUI() {

		// Create and set up the window.
		final JFrame frame = new JFrame("Tabbed Pane Example");

		// Display the window.
		frame.setSize(400, 400);
		frame.setVisible(true);
		frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

		// set grid layout for the frame
		frame.getContentPane().setLayout(new GridLayout(1, 1));

		JTabbedPane tabbedPane = new JTabbedPane(JTabbedPane.TOP);

		String tooltip1 = "Tool Tip Text 1";
		String tooltip2 = "Tool Tip Text 2";

		tabbedPane.addTab("Tab1", null, new JLabel("This is tab 1"), tooltip1);
		tabbedPane.addTab("Tab2", null, new JLabel("This is tab 2"), tooltip2);

		frame.getContentPane().add(tabbedPane);

		// get the number of tabs in this tabbed pane
		int count = tabbedPane.getTabCount();

		for (int i=0; i<count; i++) {
			System.out.println("Tootip: " + tabbedPane.getToolTipTextAt(i));
		}

	}

	public static void main(String[] args) {

  //Schedule a job for the event-dispatching thread:

  //creating and showing this application's GUI.

  javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {

public void run() {

    createAndShowGUI();

}

  });
    }

}

Output:

Tootip: Tool Tip Text 1
Tootip: Tool Tip Text 2

This was an example on how to set tool tip for tab in JTabbedPane.
