Get size of file in bytes

This is an example of how to get the size of a File in bytes. We are using the File class that is an abstract representation of file and directory pathnames. Getting the size of a File implies that you should:

  • Create a new File instance by converting the given pathname string into an abstract pathname.
  • Use the length() API method of File. This method returns the length of the file denoted by this abstract pathname. The return value is unspecified if this pathname denotes a directory.

Let’s take a look at the code snippet that follows:

package com.javacodegeeks.snippets.core;

import java.io.File;

public class GetSizeOfFileInBytes {

	public static void main(String[] args) {

		File file = new File("C://file.txt");

		// Returns the length of the file denoted by this abstract pathname.
	    // The return value is unspecified if this pathname denotes a directory.
		long size = file.length();

		System.out.println("File size in bytes is: " + size);
	}
}
