File

Create directory

With this example we are going to demonstrate how to create a directory. We are using the File class that is an abstract representation of file and directory pathnames. In short, to create a directory you should:

  • Create a new File instance by converting the given pathname string into an abstract pathname.
  • Use mkdir() API method of File. This method reates the directory named by this abstract pathname. It returns true if and only if the directory was created and false otherwise.

Let’s take a look at the code snippet that follows:

package com.javacodegeeks.snippets.core;

import java.io.File;

public class CreateDirectory {

	public static void main(String[] args) {

		File dir = new File("c://directory");

		boolean directoryCreated = dir.mkdir();

		if(directoryCreated) {
			System.out.println("Directory created");
		}
		else {
			System.out.println("Directory not created");
		}

	}

}

This was an example of how to create a directory in Java.
