Installing Fedora Spins

This is a Fedora Spins tutorial for beginners to install the custom Fedora Spins.

1. Overview

Fedora is a Red Hat project for distributing Linux. Fedora Linux is under open source and free licenses. It is base for Red Hat Commercial distribution, and CentOS. It has features for Linux groups collaboration, integration with new technologies and development. Linux Groups upstream help in providing Linux distribution updates. Distribution Update is supported for at least 13 months. Versions of Fedora are supported for six months. Fedora’s operating environment is GNOME. The other operating environments are KDE Plasma, Xfce, LXDE, Deepin, MATE, and Cinnamon. Fedora Spins are customized versions of Fedora. Spins are created for group of end customers. It consists of multiple packages. There are SIGs (Special Interest Groups) and communities who create Fedora Versions. Users can find the Fedora Spins at the web site. These Spins are standard images or installable Live CD/DVDs created using Fungi, Live CD Creator, and Revisor.

2.3 What are Spins ?

Fedora Spins can be downloaded from fedora project site. These spins support different architectures. You can access them as GNOME Live Image and KDE Live Image. Custom spins of Fedora are:

  • Sugar on a Stick
  • Fedora Games Spin
  • XFCE Desktop
  • LXQT Desktop
  • Cinnamon

2.4 Spins Advantages

Fedora Spins help in providing an experience with a set of Fedora Software packages. Fedora has rich features like Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop. Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop edition consists of high quality apps covering desktop use cases. The use cases are searching the web, messaging, and email communications. It also has apps related to gaming, entertainment, and workplace applications. Many KDE frameworks have features like consistent look and feel, intuitive interface and graphical presentation.

Fedora new versions have new features related to drivers and applications. Fedora Spin new version can be a desktop live CD which can be booted directly to a GNOME desktop. 2.5 Installing Fedora Spin

Fedora Spins are ISO files or images. You can create a new VM using ISO file. One can burn the ISO image to a USB stick or optical media to run the Fedora Spin. After that , Spin can be installed by running it and clicking on the install to hard drive on the desktop. The installation process will have a series of steps and prompts. To install the media writer, you can use the below commands:

sudo dnf install mediawriter
 mediawriter

On Mac OS, you can download the Fedora Disk Image. You can run .dmg on Mac OS. Similarly on Windows, download the application and run the executable. When the image is running, it needs to be written on the hard drive using the media writer.
