StringBuffer delete characters

With this example we are going to demonstrate how to delete characters using a StringBuffer. A StringBuffer is a thread-safe, mutable sequence of characters. A string buffer is like a String, but can be modified. At any point in time it contains some particular sequence of characters, but the length and content of the sequence can be changed through certain method calls. In short, to delete characters with a StringBuffer you should:

  • Create a new StringBuffer initialized to the contents of the specified string.
  • Use delete(int start, int end) API method of StringBuffer. The method removes the characters in a substring of this sequence.

Let’s take a look at the code snippet that follows:

package com.javacodegeeks.snippets.core;

public class StringBufferDeleteCharacters {

	public static void main(String[] args) {

		StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer("Java Code Geeks");
		System.out.println("Original text: " + sb);

		sb.delete(0, 5);
		System.out.println("Current text: " + sb);

		sb.deleteCharAt(sb.length()-1);
		System.out.println("Current text: " + sb);

	}

}

Output:

Original text: Java Code Geeks
Current text: Code Geeks
Current text: Code Geek
